For as long as I can remember I've been a documenter. Growing up I journaled my life's stories and later in life I picked up the camera and began my journey as a visual storyteller.
Documenting mine and my family's story is important to me because I want to be able to look back and remember all the little details of it. Brené Brown has this wonderful quote, "Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do." If we don't preserve our life story who will.
About 4 years ago I started using the Project Life system to document the everyday details of our daily life. If you're not already familiar with Project Life it is a simple system of documenting, designed by Becky Higgins, using photo pocket pages and albums. The best thing about the Project Life system is that you can design your album to fit your documenting style. In my albums you will find mostly photos combined with some journaling and a digital stamp, or two. I like to keep my pages as simple as possible, but you can dress yours up as much, or as little, as you like.
In the beginning I felt that my everyday life wasn't really that interesting to document, but I gave it a try anyway. After just a few months of documenting our everyday ordinary moments I was hooked. When I looked back through my album I saw what I thought at the time was boring; like photos of what we were eating, or pictures of our ever evolving homes and many moves, or how my girls had grown so much in such short periods of time, and I was moved by the stories it told. To have captured what I once thought was mundane became an authentic and beautifully honest look at our life.
It is amazing how quickly life changes without us really seeing it until years have past and remembering all the little details of it becomes nearly impossible. We are often great documenters when it comes to the big events like birthdays, or of trips we take, but we tend to miss all the daily details of our everyday life and it is those little details that make our story uniquely ours.
Project Life encourages me to print my photos and journal my everyday story, and I love keeping my albums in our family room so that they are easily accessible and ready to be enjoyed by all that flip through them.
Believe me when I say that documenting your story is something you will never regret and if you aren't doing it already I hope you will feel inspired to start today!
